is a scam

Recently I received an email from saying:

“The domain name (mydomain).COM expired recently and we were able to secure it.”

Also were instructions how to pay them $50 so they can transfer the domain to me.   They were correct that a .com version of a .org domain name I had was available.  They were lying that they had secured it.  That domain was freely available through any provider (godaddy,  1and1, etc) with no cost outside the basic <  $10 a year charge.

So if you get an email from these guys and you want that domain name just go directly to you’re preferred domain provider.

Ditto for “”. Supposedly they “secured it” and it is available for a one-time fee of only $49.00 USD.

Like you said, I went to my web hosting service and checked if the domain was available. It was, and I purchased it for their regular fee which was less than $10.00 USD.

Thanks for your “heads up” posting!

I received one of these emails from traderdomains as well, but not sure if it really qualifies as a scam or is one of the many “value-add” services out there.

I think they can be useful in highlighting that a domain is now available. I did not now that a particular domain was available and when I checked their info on my own hoster I saw they were correct, and I chose this cheaper route of just $10 to acquire it rather than $50. But to be fair, I may have missed this chance had they not alerted me, even though I did not sign up to their service.

My view is that these guys seem to fall in the category of being “potentially useful spam” rather than a scam, but I could be wrong.

Yes you are right. I wouldn’t know my domain name was available without them emailing me. But if they simply let you sign up for the domain at the fair price I wouldn’t call it a scam. But because they lead you to believe they’ve secured the domain then charge you $50 for registering it I’m calling this a scam. Also if you enter in ANY available domain name on their site you get “we’ve been able to secure this domain”.

I can verify that!!! is a scam.
This post saved me $23 bucks. I also received an email from to purchase fo $40 and then for $30. Sure enough, they did not own it and it was available to be registered through my regular registrar for $7.

Thank you for this info! Yes, this is a scam; these guys do NOT actually own these domains. When the domains come back on the market they contact entities that own similar domains and then LIE that they’ve secured the domain, when they have not! Just go and register the domain yourself and don’t pay these guys a penny!

Ye I received an email I don’t remember if it was from them but I got a domain .net because .com was taken and about 2-3mths later I get email saying .com was available and to purchase it of cause at a higher price I checked domain availability and it was available. I decided to buy the .com recently 10/2009 through my registrar will be going from .net to .com but will still keep the .net version.

A rip off most defiantly a scam.

Thank you for alerting me that my .com was available! I almost fell for it until I saw this post (among others).

Thanks for the heads up! I secured my .com for the regular price. Scumbags (but again, thanks).

Yep, got one of these too. In fact I got a series of them over a period of a month. Nearly fell for it,but fortunately just checked Godaddy myself to see if they owned it. Nope, they didn’t. So I registered it for $9.99. Total scam company
